Lake Bled

Lake Bled is Slovenia’s most beloved alpine destination, a glacial lake set against the Julian Alps, with a tiny island church at its heart and a medieval castle perched on a cliff above the water.

The lake itself is the centerpiece of any visit. Its emerald waters are ringed by a six-kilometer shoreline path, perfect for walking, running, or simply sitting on a bench with morning coffee.

Traditional pletna boats, rowed by hand since the 16th century, ferry visitors to Bled Island and the Church of the Assumption. Above the lake, Bled Castle has stood watch since 1011, today housing a museum, restaurant, and the best panoramic view in town.

Bled is more than a postcard, though. It is the gateway to Triglav National Park and the Julian Alps. Within easy reach are the Vintgar Gorge, the Pokljuka plateau, the Soča Valley, and dozens of hiking and biking routes that connect mountain villages, alpine lakes, and centuries-old farms.
